Voltie

Voltie is a European smart EV charger manufacturer based in Hungary that designs and builds its hardware in-house. The company focuses on practical electric vehicle charging equipment engineered to sit directly between household power grids, solar panels, and home automation systems.

By integrating Voltie chargers natively with Homey over your local network, you can control charging speeds, manage household energy limits, and automate daily routines based on vehicle status.

Enclosure and Hardware Construction

The Voltie charger uses a brushed stainless steel enclosure combined with a scratch-resistant acrylic front panel. Built for outdoor mounting, the housing carries an IP65 rating against water and dust ingress, as well as an IK10 impact rating to resist mechanical shock. These materials keep the internal electronics protected from harsh weather conditions and physical damage over long-term use.

For vehicle connection, the charger comes equipped with a fixed tethered Type 2 cable available in lengths of 5, 7, or 10 meters. Users who drive a Tesla can select a cable configuration equipped with an integrated charge-port opener button built directly into the handle. This allows you to press the button on the plug to open the car's charge port automatically without retrieving a key fob or opening a smartphone app first.

Integrated LED Display and Firmware

The front interface features a unique 17 by 7 LED matrix display alongside customizable rear ambient lighting. Instead of relying purely on status indicator lights or a mobile screen, the dot-matrix display shows current charging speed, state information, and text notifications directly on the charger body in 22 languages. You can view key metrics at a glance without needing to open an app on your phone while standing next to the vehicle.

Voltie's software is maintained through automatic over-the-air updates delivered across Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The charger receives continuous performance optimizations, bug fixes, and new features automatically, eliminating the need for manual maintenance or physical service appointments. This local processing architecture ensures the unit stays responsive and updated while continuing to operate smoothly within your home network.

Power Options and Standalone Protection

Voltie chargers support both single-phase and three-phase electrical connections, giving you flexibility depending on your home's wiring setup. The charging current is adjustable from 6 to 32 Amps, delivering up to 7.4 kW on a single-phase supply and up to 22 kW on three-phase infrastructure. This wide output range lets you throttle charging speed down during peak household power usage or ramp it up when fast replenishment is required.

To maintain stability during periods of heavy solar generation, the charger features a local safety system called InverterGuard. When many solar arrays in a neighborhood export power at the same time, local grid voltage can rise above safety thresholds, causing solar inverters to shut down. InverterGuard monitors incoming voltage directly on the hardware and automatically starts vehicle charging when voltage climbs too high, soaking up excess energy to prevent your solar system from going offline.

Integration with Homey

Voltie Charger Integrates with Homey over a local connection

The official Voltie app connects directly to Homey over your local area network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, preserving high-speed response times without cloud dependencies. Through native Homey Energy support, Homey can dynamically manage charging power, balance vehicle power draw alongside active household appliances and implement real-time solar surplus charging.

Here is what you can automate and track when pairing Voltie with Homey:

  • Homey Energy Integration: Homey sets Voltie’s charging power directly, ensuring your vehicle charges using available solar surplus while staying within the total power limits of your home's grid connection.
  • Single-Phase Solar Surplus Charging: Using a Flow, Homey can switch supported units to single-phase mode. This drops the minimum charging threshold to around 1.4 kW, allowing charging to start early from small solar surpluses rather than waiting for peak midday sun.
  • Dynamic Off-Peak Charging: Automatically trigger charging to start when your dynamic energy tariff drops to its cheapest hours and stop before morning peak rates kick in.
  • Overload & Main Fuse Protection: Homey automatically throttles Voltie’s charging power when heavy household appliances are running, preventing main fuse trips.
  • Welcome Home Automations: When you plug the car in, Homey can instantly display a personalized welcome message on the charger's LED screen and turn on your driveway lights.
  • Status Updates & Visual Notifications: Receive instant phone notifications when charging starts or stops, and set the charger’s rear ambient light to glow green specifically while charging from solar energy.

With Homey orchestrating your smart home energy and Voltie delivering precise local power control, managing your vehicle's charging becomes an effortless, fully automated process.
