Control Z-Wave Devices via Amazon Alexa with Homey
Z-Wave devices don’t connect directly to Amazon Alexa. To control Z-Wave lights, switches, or sensors using Alexa, you need a smart home hub that supports Z-Wave and can expose those devices to Amazon’s platform.
Homey acts as that bridge. Z-Wave devices remain paired with Homey, and Amazon Alexa accesses them through the Homey Alexa integration.
Homey stays in control of the devices and Amazon Alexa becomes an additional way to control them using voice commands or simple routines.
What You Need
To control Z-Wave devices via Amazon Alexa, you need:
- A Homey Pro with built-in Z-Wave support, or a Homey Bridge to enable Z-Wave for Homey Pro mini, Homey Cloud, or Homey Self-Hosted Server.
- One or more Z-Wave devices paired with Homey
- An Amazon account and the Alexa app
Z-Wave devices must always be paired with Homey first, before they are added to Amazon Alexa.
What “Exposing Devices” Means
When Homey exposes a Z-Wave device to Amazon Alexa:
- The device remains paired with Homey
- Homey continues to control it locally via Z-Wave
- Alexa gains access to supported device capabilities
- Alexa does not communicate with the Z-Wave device directly
Alexa communicates with Homey through the Amazon Alexa integration, and Homey controls the Z-Wave device locally.
You can think of Homey as translating Z-Wave device capabilities into something Alexa understands.
How to Expose Z-Wave Devices to Amazon Alexa
You don’t re-pair devices or change their Z-Wave configuration.
The process works like this:
1. Pair Z-Wave Devices with Homey
Make sure the Z-Wave devices you want to use are already added to Homey and working correctly.
2. Enable the Amazon Alexa Integration
In the Homey app, enable the Amazon Alexa integration and sign in with your Amazon account to link Homey to Alexa.
3. Discover Devices in the Alexa App
Open the Alexa app and start device discovery. Alexa automatically finds supported Homey devices and adds them to your smart home.
After this, your Z-Wave devices appear in the Alexa app without additional pairing steps. The devices remain paired only with Homey.
How the Connection Works
Behind the scenes:
- Z-Wave devices communicate locally with Homey
- Alexa communicates with Homey through the cloud integration
- Homey translates Alexa commands into Z-Wave commands
All Z-Wave communication remains local between Homey and the device.
What You Can Do with Alexa
Once exposed, Z-Wave devices typically appear as:
- Lights (on/off, dimming, sometimes color)
- Switches and plugs
- Sensors (status, triggers for routines)
You can:
- Use Alexa voice commands
- Control devices in the Alexa app
- Assign devices to rooms
- Include them in Alexa routines
What to Keep in Mind
- Z-Wave devices must remain paired with Homey
- Alexa only supports a standard feature set
- Not all Z-Wave capabilities are exposed
- Advanced automation remains in Homey
- Removing a device from Homey removes it from Alexa
Use Alexa for voice control and simple routines and Homey for automation and logic.
In short
Z-Wave devices can’t connect directly to Amazon Alexa.
Homey exposes Z-Wave devices to Alexa by translating their capabilities into something Alexa understands, while keeping all Z-Wave communication local.
Amazon Alexa becomes an additional way to control your devices using voice or simple routines and Homey stays in control of the Z-Wave network.
