Control KNX devices via Apple Home with Homey
KNX devices don’t connect to Apple Home on their own. KNX is a professional building automation system, designed for stable and long-term installations, not for direct integration with consumer smart home platforms.
To control KNX devices using Apple Home, you need a smart home hub that can connect to KNX and make those devices available to Apple’s platform.
Homey acts as that bridge, exposing KNX devices to Apple Home.
Homey stays in control of the KNX system. Apple Home becomes an additional way to control devices using the Apple Home app and Siri.
What you need
To control KNX devices via Apple Home, you need:
- A working KNX installation
- A KNX IP interface or IP router connected to your network
- A Homey Pro, Homey Pro mini or Homey Self-Hosted Server with KNX support
- An Apple ID and the Apple Home app
KNX devices are configured in Homey using their group addresses.
What “exposing devices” means for KNX
When Homey exposes a KNX device to Apple Home, it means Homey represents that KNX function as a smart home accessory Apple Home understands.
The device:
- remains part of the KNX installation
- continues to be controlled by KNX logic and Homey
- becomes visible in Apple Home
Apple Home does not communicate with KNX directly. All commands go through Homey.
A simple way to think about it is that Homey translates KNX functions into Apple Home accessories.
How to expose KNX devices to Apple Home with Homey
Exposing KNX devices is done from within Homey. You don’t need to modify the KNX installation itself.
The process works like this:
- Connect Homey to KNX
Add your KNX IP interface in Homey and configure the required group addresses. - Add KNX devices to Homey
Define lights, switches, dimmers, blinds, or other functions using their KNX group addresses. - Connect Homey to Apple Home
Enable the Apple Home integration in the Homey app and sign in with your Apple ID. - Select which KNX devices to expose
In Homey, choose which devices should be exposed to Google Home.
After this, the KNX devices appear in the Apple Home app automatically.
How the connection works
Behind the scenes, the setup works like this:
- Apple Home sends a command
This can be a tap in the Apple Home app or a Siri voice command. - Homey receives the command
Homey interprets it as a KNX action. - Homey sends the KNX command
The command is sent to the KNX bus via the IP interface.
What you can do in Apple Home
Once exposed, KNX devices appear in Apple Home as standard accessories, such as:
- Lights and dimmers
- Switches
- Blinds or shutters
You can:
- Control devices in the Apple Home app
- Use Siri voice commands
- Assign devices to rooms
- Include them in scenes and basic automations
What to keep in mind
A few important points:
- Apple Home supports basic device functions only
- Advanced KNX logic stays in Homey or the KNX system
- KNX devices remain fully functional without Apple Home
- Removing a device from Homey also removes it from Apple Home
Use Apple Home for control and scenes and Homey and KNX for logic and reliability.
In short
KNX devices don’t connect to Apple Home directly.
Homey bridges KNX to Apple Home by translating KNX functions into smart home accessories Apple Home understands.
Apple Home becomes a simple, familiar way to interact with it and Homey stays in control of the KNX system.
