Control WiFi Devices via Google Home with Homey
Many WiFi smart home devices already work with Google Home. So it’s reasonable to ask: do you even need Homey for WFi devices?
The honest answer is: sometimes no, often yes. It depends on how advanced, coordinated, and reliable you want your smart home to be.
Homey does not replace WiFi or reconnect devices differently. Instead, it adds an automation and coordination layer on top of your existing devices.
Google Home becomes the control and voice interface. Homey becomes the logic engine behind it.
How WiFi Devices Usually Work with Google Home
Most WiFi devices follow this model:
- The device connects to your WiFi network
- The device connects to the manufacturer’s cloud
- Google Home connects to that cloud via the brand integration
For many users, this setup works perfectly for:
- Basic on/off control
- Voice commands
- Simple Google Home routines
If this is all you need, Homey is not required.
Where Homey Adds Value
Homey becomes useful when your smart home grows beyond simple device control.
With Homey, WiFi devices can:
- Work together with Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, infrared, or 433 MHz devices
- Participate in advanced automations based on multiple conditions
- Be coordinated across brands from one central place
- Use local control where supported by the device integration
Important:
Homey does not automatically make cloud-based WiFi devices local. If a device supports local control, Homey can use it. If not, it will still rely on the manufacturer’s cloud.
Homey acts as the automation and coordination layer. Google Home remains the voice and control layer.
What You Need
To use WiFi devices with Google Home through Homey, you need:
- A Homey Pro or a Homey Bridge, in combination with Homey Pro mini, Homey Cloud or Homey Self-Hosted Server - depending on the required connectivity.
- WiFi devices supported by a Homey app or integration
- A Google account and the Google Home app
WiFi devices do not require additional radio hardware in Homey. They integrate via supported APIs (local or cloud).
All devices must first be added to Homey, before they are added to Google Home.
What “Exposing Devices” Means
When Homey exposes a WiFi device to Google Home:
- The device keeps its original WiFi connection
- Homey controls the device through its supported integration
- Google Home communicates with Homey, not directly with the device
Homey does not change how WiFi works. It changes how devices work together.
How to Use WiFi Devices with Homey and Google Home
A typical setup looks like this:
1. Add WiFi devices to Homey
Install the relevant Homey app and connect your device so it works correctly in Homey.
2. Link Homey to Google Home
In the Google Home app:
- Go to Add → Set up device → Works with Google
- Select Homey
- Sign in with your Athom account
3. Sync devices
Google Home imports supported Homey devices automatically.
You can manage which devices are exposed to Google Home in the Homey settings.
No re-pairing is required.
How the Connection Works
Behind the scenes:
WiFi device → Manufacturer (cloud or local API)
Homey → Device integration
Google Home → Homey integration
When you give a voice command:
- Google Home sends the request to Homey.
- Homey translates the command and sends it to the device.
- Homey remains the control layer.
What You Can Do in Google Home
Once exposed, WiFi devices appear as standard smart devices, depending on their capabilities.
You can:
- Control devices with Google Assistant voice commands
- Control devices in the Google Home app
- Assign devices to rooms
- Include devices in Google Home routines
What to Keep in Mind
- Homey does not replace native Google Home support
- Some WiFi devices work perfectly without Homey
- Not all device features may be exposed to Google Home
- Advanced automation logic stays in Homey
- Reliability depends on whether the device supports local control
Use Google Home for quick control and voice access and Homey to coordinate devices and run advanced automations.
In Short
WiFi devices often work directly with Google Home — and that’s completely fine.
Homey doesn’t exist to “fix” WiFi. It exists to connect technologies, automate across brands, and coordinate your entire smart home.
Homey runs the logic and Google Home makes it easy to control.

Smart home technologies and platforms supported by Homey
Smart homes often use multiple wireless technologies and platforms. As a powerful smart home hub, Homey supports a wide range of communication standards, including Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, KNX, 433 MHz, WiFi, Bluetooth and Infrared.
Homey also integrates with popular smart home platforms such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home. By combining multiple technologies and platforms in one system, Homey allows devices from different ecosystems to work together in one flexible smart home setup.
