Control KNX devices via Amazon Alexa with Homey

KNX devices don’t connect to Amazon Alexa on their own. KNX is a professional building automation system, built for stability and long-term installations, not for direct integration with consumer voice assistants.

To control KNX devices using Amazon Alexa, you need a smart home hub that can connect to KNX and expose those devices to Alexa.

Homey acts as that bridge, exposing KNX devices to Amazon Alexa.

Homey stays in control of the KNX system. Amazon Alexa becomes an additional way to control devices using voice commands or simple routines.

What you need

To control KNX devices via Amazon Alexa, you need:

KNX devices are configured in Homey using their group addresses.

What “exposing devices” means for KNX

When Homey exposes a KNX device to Amazon Alexa, it means Homey represents that KNX function as a smart home device Alexa understands.

The device:

  • remains part of the KNX installation
  • continues to be controlled by KNX logic and Homey
  • becomes visible in the Alexa app

Amazon Alexa does not communicate with KNX directly. All commands go through Homey.

A simple way to think about it is that Homey translates KNX functions into Alexa-compatible controls.

How to expose KNX devices to Amazon Alexa with Homey

KNX devices don’t connect directly to Amazon Alexa. Instead, Homey connects to your KNX installation and exposes supported KNX devices to Alexa through the Amazon Alexa integration. In most cases, you do not need to modify the KNX programming itself, but you must have access to the correct group addresses and a properly configured KNX IP interface

The process works like this:

  1. Connect Homey to KNX
Add your KNX IP interface in Homey and configure the required group addresses. Homey communicates with the KNX installation over IP and does not interfere with existing KNX logic.
  2. Add KNX devices to Homey
Define lights, switches, dimmers, blinds, or other functions in Homey using their KNX group addresses. Once configured, these functions appear as devices in Homey.
  3. Connect Homey to Amazon Alexa
In the Homey app, enable the Amazon Alexa integration and sign in with your Amazon account to link Homey to Alexa.
  4. Discover devices in the Alexa app
Open the Alexa app and start device discovery. Alexa discovers devices exposed through the Homey skill during device discovery and adds them to your smart home.

After this, the KNX devices appear in the Alexa app without any additional pairing or configuration. The devices remain fully controlled by Homey, and all KNX communication continues to run through your existing KNX infrastructure.

How the connection works

Behind the scenes, the setup works like this:

  1. Alexa receives a command
This can be a voice command or an action in the Alexa app.
  2. Homey receives the command
Homey interprets it as a KNX action.
  3. Homey sends the KNX command
The command is sent to the KNX bus via the IP interface.

What you can do with Amazon Alexa

Once exposed, KNX devices appear in Alexa as standard smart home devices, such as:

  • Lights and dimmers
  • Switches
  • Blinds or shutters

You can:

  • Control devices using Alexa voice commands
  • Control devices in the Alexa app
  • Assign devices to rooms
  • Include them in Alexa routines

What to keep in mind

A few important points:

  • Alexa supports basic device functions only
  • Advanced KNX logic stays in Homey or the KNX system
  • KNX devices remain fully functional without Alexa
  • Removing a device from Homey also removes it from Alexa

Use Amazon Alexa for voice and simple routines and use Homey and KNX for automation and reliability.

In short

KNX devices don’t connect to Amazon Alexa directly.

Homey bridges KNX to Amazon Alexa by translating KNX functions into smart home controls Alexa understands.

Amazon Alexa becomes a simple, familiar way to interact with it and Homey stays in control of the KNX system.
