Control KNX devices via Matter with Homey
KNX devices don’t support Matter on their own. KNX is a professional building automation system, designed for long-term installations and reliable local control, not for native compatibility with newer consumer standards like Matter.
To make KNX devices available in Matter-based platforms, you need a smart home hub that can connect to KNX and expose selected functions in a Matter-compatible way.
Homey acts as that bridge, exposing KNX devices to Matter. Homey stays in control of the KNX system and the Matter-based platforms gain access to KNX devices through Homey.
What you need
To control KNX devices via Matter, you need:
- A working KNX installation
- A KNX IP interface or IP router connected to your network
- A Homey Pro, Homey Pro mini or Homey Self-Hosted Server with KNX support
- A Matter-compatible platform, such as Apple Home or Google Home with Matter enabled
KNX devices are configured in Homey using their group addresses.
What “exposing devices” means for KNX and Matter
When Homey exposes a KNX device to Matter, it does not turn KNX into a native Matter system.
Instead, Homey:
- Keeps the KNX connection fully intact
- Translates selected KNX functions into Matter-compatible device types
- Shares those devices with Matter platforms
The device:
- remains part of the KNX installation
- continues to be controlled by KNX logic and Homey
- appears in Matter platforms in a simplified, standardised form
Matter platforms do not communicate with KNX directly. All commands go through Homey.
A simple way to think about it is that Homey acts as a Matter Bridge for KNX.
How to expose KNX devices to Matter with Homey
Exposing KNX devices to Matter is done from within Homey. In most cases, you do not need to change the KNX programming itself, but you must have access to the correct group addresses and a properly configured KNX IP interface.
The process works like this:
- Connect Homey to KNX
Add your KNX IP interface in Homey and configure the required group addresses. - Add KNX devices to Homey
Define lights, switches, dimmers, blinds, or other functions using their KNX group addresses. - Enable Matter support in Homey
Turn on the Matter Bridge functionality in the Homey app. - Select which KNX devices to expose
Choose which devices should be shared via Matter. - Add Homey to your Matter platform
Use your Matter-compatible app to add Homey as a Matter bridge. After commissioning Homey as a Matter Bridge, the selected devices appear in your Matter platform.
After this, the KNX devices appear in your Matter platform.
How the connection works
Behind the scenes, the setup works like this:
- A Matter platform sends a command
This can be a tap in an app or a voice command via a Matter-connected assistant. - Homey receives the command
Homey interprets it as a KNX action. - Homey sends the KNX command
The command is sent to the KNX bus via the IP interface.
What you can do via Matter
Once exposed, KNX functions that can be mapped to supported Matter device types appear in Matter-based platforms as standard accessories. Depending on how they are configured, this may include:
- On/Off or dimmable lights
- Switches and outlets
- Blinds, shutters, or other cover controls
Within a Matter-compatible platform, you can:
- Control these devices through the platform’s app
- Use voice assistants connected via Matter
- Include them in Matter-based scenes and automations
Keep in mind that devices are represented according to Matter’s standardized device models. Advanced or KNX-specific functionality remains in Homey or within the KNX system itself.
What to keep in mind
A few important points:
- Matter exposes a standardised feature set, not full KNX functionality
- Advanced KNX logic stays in Homey or the KNX system
- KNX devices remain fully operational without Matter
- Removing a device from Homey also removes it from Matter
Use Matter for cross-platform access and use Homey and KNX for automation and reliability.
In short
KNX devices don’t support Matter directly.
Homey bridges KNX to Matter by exposing selected KNX functions in a Matter-compatible way, while keeping full control and logic inside the KNX system and Homey.
Matter becomes a universal layer to access KNX devices across platforms and Homey stays in control.

Smart home technologies and platforms supported by Homey
Smart homes often use multiple wireless technologies and platforms. As a powerful smart home hub, Homey supports a wide range of communication standards, including Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, KNX, 433 MHz, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Infrared.
Homey also integrates with popular smart home platforms such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home. By combining multiple technologies and platforms in one system, Homey allows devices from different ecosystems to work together in one flexible smart home setup.
